Add in the latest installment of “WHO THE FUCK IS ARCADE FIRE?” Delta Goodrem responds to accusation she took a little too much inspiration from Rebellion (Lies):

“I hadn’t heard of (Rebellion (Lies)) until that moment and then I checked it out and was blown away. They’re incredible. I think the whole thing was a bit of a storm in a teacup.”

Either way, she should have borrowed a little more. This song is awful.

NOTES FROM A 4HR SEMINAR (AKA WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE)

So after 3 months of working for a large corporation (that shall remain nameless) I was made to sit through an induction which, as my Outlook calendar kindly reminded me, was scheduled to run for 4 hours. I was promised breakfast, showbags and essentially, it’s 4hrs off work, so I wasn’t too upset. But as it turns out there was no substantial breakfast, I already have a notepad (re: showbags) and the whole thing was so unspeakably lame that I’d rather be at work.

I decided to take notes partly for my own amusement and partly because this experience was so traumatizing that it needed to be documented.

·       10 mins late. I’m made to sit at the front. I can’t even comfortably play scramble with friends.

·         I’m too hungover for this shit (via Tuesday trivia winnings)

·         The woman conducting the induction has a bowl of “kool mints” as a reward for correct answers/ participation. I’m not a dog and this isn’t primary school. Also, see point #2.

·         Corporate talk, corporate talk, figures, “new labour”, “courage to go beyond” , more corporate talk

·         Meet and greet exercise. I make an inappropriate/lame/obligatory sexual joke.

Midway through my conversation with some girl, a guy walk over to us:

“Great! I can do two at the same time”
“That’s a bit ambitious. It’s only 9:30 in the morning. Are you sure you’re up for it?”

“(flatly) I didn’t mean it in that sense”

Awkward silence.

·         Now she is using the term “co-stars” to refer to colleagues

·         Next speaker steps up. “15mins to morning tea”, he politely informs us. Fuck yeah! He proceeds to open his presentation – 30 slides. Fuck.

·         Jason whispers to me, “who do you think is gay in this room?”. “Maybe Thom”. “Mmm…I hope so” (pause) “should I have sex with him”

·         The guy addressing us answers someone’s question (seriously people, questions?) with “very difficultly”. “Difficultly” is not a word!

·         Contemplating a bathroom break but I’d be the first. 1hr and 20mins and no one needed to pee?!

·         I’m on my 3rd cup of tea and 2nd cup of coffee.

·         Morning tea! Finally! Oh what?! A mini muffin is not sufficient.

·         I have two. And even then…

·         Mentally black out for an hour.

·         Tune back in for more figures and immediately I’m back out.

·         Analysing my lunch options. Caaaaaaarefully

But all this is pretty much summed in the title of the song above

I reviewed the latest album from Grimes for a little music publication based in Melbourne called The Dwarf. I say “latest” as if I know her entire back catalogue, I actually didn’t know it even existed (with the exception of that one off track Vanessa). I was under the impression Grimes was just the latest buzzword on the blogosphere but as it turns out this is her 3rd album. Anyhow, this is all irrelevant, Visions is really good - Read / listen / watch

And she seems pretty cool which is always nice

Song of the moment: FRANK OCEAN - NOVACANE (Well the full length album version anyway. This video/radio edit [?] feels a little unsatisfying. Kinda like a diet Coke)

I had a general disliking for a lot of music that fell under the RnB/Rap/Hip-Hop umbrella for the better part of the last 5 or 6 years. I realise it’s poor practice to dismiss a whole genre of music, or 3 in this case, but I think I was still recovering from overexposure to a lot, and I mean A LOT of bad music in my early teens. But lately it seems that RnB/Hip-Hop/Rap has come back with a vengeance in my life and completely taken over the “last/most played” tabs in my iTunes. I’m not sure whether I’m discovering artists who do this better than what I’ve come to expect, or whether there’s a new movement in these genres that are making it sounds oh so good, but either way, I’m sold all over again.

Recent favourites:

Sahbazz Palaces

A$ap Rocky

The Weeknd

Drake

Frank Ocean

Odd Future

I think I lost my enthusiasm for Arctic Monkeys somewhere between My Favourite Worst Nightmare and what felt like a Josh Homme tribute album, Humbug. I was a huge fan of Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not - the sharp, witty lyrics, the unpolished feel of it all, their youth seeping into every element of the music but the quality. That album was as brilliant as it was exciting. But sadly their second release felt like a predictable sequel. And while the third went in a complete new direction, it was one that did nothing for me. (except maybe Cornerstone)

A Swedish guy I met in Mexico recently (who happened to have really great taste in music) assured me that the Arctic Monkeys are still one of the best bands around today. I was sceptical. “Have you heard Suck it and See”, he asked. I said no, then surely made a lame pun with the word “suck” in relation to the album. He might or might not have laughed, if he did it was purely out of politeness, and told me I should check it out. But really, I had next to no interest in hearing it at all.

And it wasn’t until I heard the one off single/download/release R U Mine? That I thought of the Arctic Monkeys again. Mainly because the song happens to be so god damn good! All of a sudden it seemed as if they grew into the sound they were trying on Humbug. R U Mine is flawless. Flawless badassness. I wondered what happened between Humbug and R U Mine? Oh that’s right, Suck it and See. I guess I might download it after all.

Oh and it turns out Alex Turner had an image makeover and is a bigger babe than ever.

I know Wild Beasts have been around for a while but somehow I only discovered them the other week. Where have they been all my life? Or more like, where have I been for the last three albums? Not sure, but they’re definitely my flavour of the month.

watching the Australian Open in the most un-Australian summer I’ve seen in my 12 years in this country.
I think I took those 40 degree days for granted. The ones when the sweltering heat makes it impossible to do anything else but lay on the couch in the starfish position and eat ice cream.

Sigh… there’s always next year, I guess. (Which is also coincidentally enough Samantha Stosur’s motto these days)

To help celebrate the release of the music video for Niggas in Paris here’s something even better.

It’s a shame about this video though. I feel like what’s easily the best track on Watch the Throne deserved better than just an epilepsy attack waiting to happen. And I’m really not sure why Yeezy thought it was a good idea to use live audio. Or why nobody thought to advise him otherwise.

That shit cray.
